Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth (Eichhoria crassipes) is a free-floating aquatic plant.

The dark green leaves are circular to elliptical in shape and attached to a spongy, inflated petiole.  The roof system is thick, heavily branched, dark and fibrous.  The water hyacinth has violet flowers that form on a spike.  The plant reproduces by seeds and through daughter plants that form on rhizomes.

Water hyacinth does not tolerate very hot temperatures, salinity higher than 15%, or pH higher than 8.

Water hyacinth is a very aggressive plant that forms thick mats.  Do not allow the plants to cover the entire surface of the pond as they can cause oxygen depletion and fish kills.

Water hyacinth help control algae growth by reducing sunlight penetration.   It also absorbs the nutrients that would otherwise be utilized by algae.
