The filter can be opened and the individual filter components can be cleaned and washed manually. Unlatch the 4 clamps, and pull up on the container lid (this may require considerate force, due to the pressure seal on the lid). Do not use any cleaning agents, but instead, wash the sponges with tap water.

The bio-balls should only be cleaned if they are highly contaminated. You should only use pond water to clean the bio-balls, in order to preserve the micro-organism growths inside these balls and to keep the filter biologically active.

After cleaning, when re-assembling the device, ensure that the O-ring rubber seal is correctly positioned. If the water-tight seal is out of place or misaligned, there could be significant leakage during filter operation.
