Dwarf/Strawberry water hyacinths (Eichhoria crassipes) are free-floating aquatic plants. The dark green leaves are circular to elliptical in shape and attached to a spongy, inflated stem. The root system is thick, heavily branched, dark, and fibrous. The water hyacinth has violet flowers that form on a spike. The plant reproduces by seeds and through daughter plants that form on rhizomes. These hyacinths grow to about 6 inches in diameter and about 6 inches high.

Water hyacinths do not tolerate very hot temperatures, salinity higher than 15%, or a pH higher than 8.

Water hyacinths are very aggressive plants that form dense mats. Do not allow the plants to cover the entire surface of the pond as they can cause oxygen depletion and fish kills.

Water hyacinths help control algae growth by reducing sunlight penetration. They also absorb the nutrients that would otherwise be utilized by algae.
